Planning

Too often, those seeking to develop multifunctional land-use projects find themselves blocked by the planning system. We want to transform it into an enabler of common good land management rather than an obstacle.

Our approach to planning

The planning system plays a pivotal role in protecting land and can facilitate common good land use, but it is also often experienced as a blocker by people developing land-based projects. The impact of new planning reforms is yet to be seen, but common good land use could help deliver the National Planning Policy Framework objective of sustainable development.

Where new development is necessary, it should create resilient spaces which add value to surrounding local communities. Our research and practical work with communities has led us to believe that the planning system needs to recognise the multifunctional nature of common good land projects and take account of the social, economic and environmental benefits they are able to deliver through their activities.
